US Secretary of Energy Chris Wright has publicly voiced support for New York Congressman Mike Lawler’s call to "rebuild and reopen" the Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant recently.
Units 2 and 3 of the Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant were shut down ahead of schedule in 2020 and 2021 respectively, even before their operating licenses expired. The plant has now been sold to a subsidiary of Holtec International for decommissioning. Once, these two reactors supplied a quarter of the electricity for the local area; their shutdown has led to a surge in local power costs and mounting pressure on New York’s power grid, which together have driven up regional electricity prices.
In response, Mike Lawler stated that while New York State has plans to invest in new nuclear power projects in the north, restarting existing power plants is equally important. He called for a diversified energy strategy, including support for nuclear energy and the approval of natural gas pipelines, and urged that local communities like Buchanan, which have long supplied electricity to New York State, not be neglected in the process.

For the restart plan, Congressman Lawler cited Holtec International’s progressing Palisades Nuclear Power Plant restart project in Michigan as an example, arguing that the Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant is fully capable of resuming operations. Despite the technical and regulatory challenges associated with the restart, the joint public statement by the US Secretary of Energy and the lawmaker marks that the issue of whether to restart the plant will be pushed back into the public eye once again.
